This two-day, pre-meeting trip (Friday and Saturday, June 19-20) will focus on the surface processes leading to the development of weathering profiles on Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Kohala. The trip will highlight changes in hydrological flow and hence pathways by which weathering products are delivered to the ocean, development of pedogenic thresholds and partitioning of soils into different process domains and the role that soil nutrient supply played in guiding the development of pre-contact Polynesian agriculture. The trip starts at 8 AM on Friday and ends about 6 PM on Saturday. The exertion level is mild. More detailed information and updates are available at:http://www.geo.cornell.edu/eas/PeoplePlaces/Faculty/derry-new/hawaii/KohalaSoils.html

This trip will provide an overview of Wai‘anae volcano, the older of the two that make up the island of O‘ahu (there is a third volcano in the cluster, Ka‘ena, but it is all below sea level). We will examine lava flows, dikes, sills, basalt, rhyodacite, evidence of changes in relative sea level, and get a sense for the structure of this very well-exposed Hawaiian shield volcano. Hiking will be minimal, but it will be hot. Pickup/drop-off in Honolulu.Difficulty: Mild Exertion/Strenuous.
