Carbon release generally increased as nitrate increased, but it was lower in the 800 uM addition than the 400 uM addition. Why?
Hi Dr. Sabine, If you are referring to carbon released as DIC from the remineralization of organic matter, then I suspect the reason is because of sulfate reduction that occurred in addition to nitrate reduction during this particular incubation. We did not analyze for sulfate in this study, but DIC and ammonium were high in the 400uM incubation and sulfate reduction produces both DIC and ammonium while consuming organic matter. The laboratory that performed nutrient analysis for us also reported that they suspected sulfate to be present in some of the samples from the 400uM incubation.
