Could you explain a bit more how one can make the distinction between abiotic and biotic signatures in these spectra?
We investigated mixtures of potential biomolecules at abundance ratios representative for either abiotic or biotic chemistry. The peak patterns in the resulting mass spectra of the abiotic mixtures have very different appearances compared to the mass spectra of the biotic mixtures. In this way, we can clearly distinguish between abiotic and biotic signatures in the mass spectra. You nicely see that for example on slide 16 "Fatty acids in abiotic and biotic abundance ratios".

Is there a mission being planned for this? What would the time frame be?
A mission planned for this is Europa Clipper. The spacecraft flying to Jupiter's moon Europa carries a suitable mass spectrometer for the detection of potential biomolecules. Launch is scheduled for 2024.
