Hi Fiona, Great, clear presentation, especially on the crystal structure work! The zeunerite-metazeunerite system varies from 8-12 H2O molecules per formula unit. Has your work shown any evidence for intermediate compositions (9, 10, or 11 H2O?) and if so, might this also affect the leaching of U and As at certain conditions? thanks, from Owen Missen (Monash University and Museums Victoria, Melbourne, Australia)
Hi Owen, thank you so much! So glad you liked the presentation and thank you for your question. During our neutron diffraction experiments we monitored the structural changes of zeunerite in situ under increasing temperature. Our study suggests that zeunerite rapidly transitions to metazeunerite without any intermediate phases – or if there are any – our analysis was not fast enough to detect them. That being said, I believe that if we were to isolate an intermediate hydrate phase it would be highly unstable. Analogues that contain Ba2+, Mg2+, and Ca2+ cations exist with a hydration state of 10 H2O pfu, however, these cations occupy different sites in the interlayer structure. The copper containing minerals are quite unique!
