Northeast Big Island Hawaii Soils

Contacts: Oliver Chadwick, Louis Derry
Price: US$673

This two-day, pre-meeting trip (Friday and Saturday, June 19-20) will focus on the surface processes leading to the development of weathering profiles on Mauna Loa, Mauna Kea and Kohala. The trip will highlight changes in hydrological flow and hence pathways by which weathering products are delivered to the ocean, development of pedogenic thresholds and partitioning of soils into different process domains and the role that soil nutrient supply played in guiding the development of pre-contact Polynesian agriculture. The trip starts at 8 AM on Friday and ends about 6 PM on Saturday. The exertion level is mild. More detailed information and updates are available at:

http://www.geo.cornell.edu/eas/PeoplePlaces/Faculty/derry-new/hawaii/KohalaSoils.html

The cost is $673/person which includes lodging for 3 nights (Thursday, Friday and Saturday), ground transport (SUVs) and most meals. NOTE although the field trip will take place on Friday and Saturday, we expect the delegates to arrive on Thursday, and not leave until Sunday. Lodging will be in Waikoloa Village which is reasonably close to the Kona airport (~ $50 Uber ride) or if you arrive at Kona airport on Thursday late afternoon or early evening, we may be able to pick you up at the airport in groups. We will deliver everyone to the Kona Airport by about 10 AM on Sunday so you can plan on booking flights to Honolulu starting after about 11:30 AM.

Difficulty: Mild Exertion/Strenuous.

PLEASE NOTE: delegates attending this field trip will need to book their own flights in addition to their place on the trip.

Places on this trip are now full and bookings are closed.

This trip will focus on the physical volcanology and societal impacts of very recent eruptions of Kīlauea, particularly in 2014-2015 and 2018. We will visit both the summit of the volcano, to see the 2018 caldera, and selected localities on the lower East Rift Zone.

The trip begins and ends outside the Hawaiian baggage claim in Hilo airport.

The trip is now full, but check back in case of cancellations.

Start time: 8:00 am Sat, 27 June (fly on HA 102, 5:00 am; or HA 132, 6:40 am. NOT on HA 162)

End time: 5:00 pm Sat, 27 June (depart HA381, 6:11 pm or any later flight)
