Scientific Mentoring Program for Early Career Scientists
At an international science meeting, you will be faced with new experiences and expectations, both academically and socially. The Goldschmidt Mentoring Program is designed to ease the transition into scientific life.
What is a mentor?
A mentor is generally a more-experienced scientist who passes on their knowledge, tips and skills to a less-experienced scientist or student. Mentoring is not friendship or tutoring. It has a specific purpose, where the relationship is entirely focussed on you - the mentee. It is an informal process, designed to provide you with a support structure to help you get oriented in the next stage of your scientific life. Please remember the mentor you are assigned has volunteered some highly valuable time to assist you. If accepted onto the program you will be expected to respect this gift and arrive for all arranged meetings punctually and well prepared.
Why participate in a mentor program?
Being part of a mentor program you:
- are provided with the opportunity to meet and talk with other young scientists
- benefit from hearing how others are managing their transition into scientific life
- will get the chance to consult with a more-experienced scientist (the mentor) and meet the other mentors
- Can get an insiders' view of the field and tips on how to make the most of your early career years
- have the opportunity to find resources and other areas of support quickly and easily
Who are the mentors?
Experienced scientists at a variety of career stages who know all about many of the challenges you are facing now.
When will I get a mentor? When will we meet?
After June 18th, you will be contacted by the mentoring team with further information. You will be assigned a mentor and you will arrange with your mentor to meet at the ice-breaker reception. You may arrange see them again at the Mentoring Lounge early in the week and you can arrange further meetings with your mentor through-out the week.
Every effort will be made to match mentees with an appropriate mentor. However, due to the availability of volunteers in specific areas, we are unable to guarantee this.
