My expertise is in low-temperature geochemistry and biogeochemistry with a focus on weathering and mineral nutrient cycling in soils using a critical zone science approach. Specific research goals include resolving rates of mineral weathering and soil formation and identifying and quantifying feedbacks between mineral weathering, erosion, and biology in the critical zone. Future global challenges to environmental sustainability and food security urgently require the ability to accurately “earthcast” changes in critical zones, but that will not be possible until we can untangle the highly interconnected processes involved. I utilise a range of techniques at multiple spatial and temporal scales to examine these interconnected processes, including microscopy and spectroscopy (e.g. SEM, microprobe, synchrotron-based techniques), wet chemistry (elemental and isotopic), reactive transport modelling, and collaborate on molecular geomicrobiology analyses.
