Sujoy Mukhopadhyay is a geochemist whose research focuses on understanding the feedback and linkages between processes operating within the deep Earth and processes operating on the Earth’s surface. Recent work has centered on the Hadean, a fascinating period of Earth’s history that effectively sets the boundary condition for the subsequent evolution of planet Earth. His primary tools are the noble gases, which are unique and powerful tracers of early events because of their inert nature and zoo of isotopes, some of which were produced only during the first few hundred million years after the start of the Solar System. He has pioneered new analytical techniques for measuring noble gas isotopes and the new measurements are providing a more comprehensive view of early Earth events. Sujoy completed his Ph.D. from Caltech in 2001, which was followed by a postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Terrestrial Magnetism at the Carnegie Institution of Washington. He has been on the faculty at Harvard in the Department of Earth and Planetary Sciences since 2003.Session convenor: 05g
